Bus Bridge Service

At times, Caltrain may temporarily replace train service with bus service. This is known as a bus bridge.

We use bus bridges during construction projects, emergency repairs, weather-related impacts, special events, or other situations that require adjustments to regular rail operations. Bus bridges help maintain travel along the corridor when trains cannot operate through a specific segment.

  • Buses operate between specific Caltrain stations.
  • Riders transfer between train and bus service at clearly marked locations.
  • Service frequency may vary depending on traffic and operating conditions.

Caltrain works to minimize disruption and maintain safe, reliable connections.

Caltrain may coordinate with Bay Area transit partners to provide bus bridge service. Depending on the location and situation, replacement service may be operated by agencies such as:

When partner agencies assist, Caltrain communicates fare details and transfer instructions in advance.

Bus bridges may operate:

  • Between two stations or across multiple stations.
  • For a few hours or for an extended construction period.
  • On weekdays, weekends or both, depending on the project or event.

Travel times may increase due to traffic conditions. Boarding locations may differ from regular train platforms. Signage, station announcements, and staff support will guide riders during the transition.

Buses used for bridge service are ADA accessible. Space for bicycles may be limited depending on the vehicle type.

Fare instructions may vary based on the type of disruption and whether a transit partner operates the service.

In some cases:

  • Riders may need to tap on and off at designated Caltrain stations.
  • Partner agencies may honor Caltrain tickets and passes during the bus bridge period.
  • Bus service may be provided at no additional charge to Caltrain riders.

Always follow the fare guidance provided in the active service alert for your trip.

Before traveling, check current service information at caltrain.com/alerts or caltrain.com/status. Riders can subscribe to real-time alerts and select specific trains, stations and times that match their travel needs.

Bus bridges are temporary measures that allow Caltrain to maintain corridor connectivity while critical work or emergency response efforts take place. We appreciate your patience and cooperation during these periods of adjusted service.
