By Dan Lieberman, @LiebermanTweets The New Year of the Pig is here, meaning it is time again for the Southwest Airlines Chinese New Year’s Festival & Parade in San Francisco. For those looking to catch this majestic cultural event on Saturday, February 23, Caltrain is on hand to get you there for the show. Caltrain’s Saturday schedule offers service between San Jose and the Bayshore Station every 90 minutes, with two Baby Bullet express trains in each direction. Please note that the San Francisco weekend bus bridge will be in effect. At the San Francisco Caltrain Station, passengers can transfer to Muni’s nearby 30 and 45 bus lines or to the N-Judah light-rail line, which will take attendees to the parade. The parade starts at 5:15 p.m. at Second Street and Market Street, and will travel along Geary, Powell and Post streets before finishing at Kearny Street and Columbus Avenue. Riders can also transfer to BART at the Millbrae Transit Center. Caltrain’s last bus leaves San Francisco at 11:40 p.m. and Caltrain will depart Bayshore at 12:15 a.m. and make all weekend local stops to San Jose. Caltrain reminds attendees that alcohol is not allowed on trains after 9 p.m. following special events. Named one of the top 10 parades in the world by the International Festivals & Events Association, the Chinese New Year’s Parade has been a tradition in San Francisco since the 1860s. Thousands of people attend the event, which celebrates the Lunar New Year. The parade features elaborately-designed floats, costumed performers, firecracker displays and much more. In order to avoid the long lines that often accompany major events, passengers are encouraged to use the convenient Caltrain Mobile ticketing app. Caltrain is a proof-of-payment system. Parking at Caltrain stations costs $5.50 for the day, and permits can be purchased through ticket machines onsite. Paid parking rules are enforced throughout the day.
