Not all riders can adjust their schedules, but some may have flexibility. Reviewing ridership trends can help you identify less crowded trains outside peak commute times.

You may consider:

  • Traveling earlier or later than peak commute hours.
  • Using local or parallel transit services where available.
  • Exploring first- and last-mile options such as walking, biking or connecting bus service.

If you find yourself on a crowded train, please:

  • Check neighboring cars or another floor on your car for open seats.
  • Remember, standing or sitting in a stairwell or aisle is not allowed.

  • Remove your backpack when standing on a crowded train.
  • Keep seats free of luggage or personal items.
  • Stand clear of doors until all departing passengers exit before boarding.

Small shifts in travel patterns can help balance demand across the system.

Before traveling, check train status and service information at caltrain.com/alerts. Riders can subscribe to real-time notifications tailored to their trains, stations and travel times

Capacity Bike Car

Bike cars often reach capacity during peak hours.

  • Electric trains have two bike cars and are limited to 36 bikes per bike car (72 bikes total per train).

If you are not traveling with a bicycle, please use a standard passenger car to preserve space for cyclists. Allow bicyclists to remain near their bikes in designated bike cars for safety.

Riders bringing bicycles on board should review bike policy guidelines before traveling.

  • If possible, park your bike in one of our BikeLink bike lockers available at most stations.
  • Report any bike related concerns or feedback here
