Caltrain Station Power Outages: What You Need to Know

In the event of a power outage, Caltrain stations systems like lighting, ticket vending machines, Clipper Card readers, electronic platform signage and audio announcements may become inoperable.

In such cases, Caltrain service will continue to function safely. Operational impacts from a power outage would be limited because track systems are equipped with backup power sources and failsafe measures in the event of a power failure. Occasionally power outages will be the result of planned Public Safety Power Shutoffs, which are governed by PG&E. Track systems impacted by such outages will be field-monitored to ensure systems are continuing to function properly.

While electronic station signage and audio announcements on the platform may not be functioning during an outage, Caltrain will continue to broadcast service information, including single tracking and track change notifications, on Twitter and at www.caltrain.com/alerts. Passengers can also call Caltrain Customer Service at 1.800.660.4287.

In the event that passengers arrive or depart at a station that does not have power, please note the following:

  • Clipper Card:
    • If you are unable to TAG ON at a station prior to boarding, notify your conductor.
    • If you are unable to TAG OFF at a station upon getting off the train, contact Clipper Customer Support at custserv@clippercard.com or call 1.877.878.8883. and explain your situation to ensure you are not overcharged.
  • Ticket Machines:
    • If the ticket machines are inoperable, notify your conductor.
    • Parking will not be enforced at stations where ticket machines are inoperable due to power outages.
