Young People Ride Caltrain for $1, From the Mall to Outside Lands

For just $1, young riders (5-18, 4 and under always ride for free) can hop on Caltrain and go anywhere along the corridor, making it the best way for kids and teens to travel to regularly scheduled activities, like jobs, team practice or school, or to special events like Outside Lands or a Giants’ game.

The numbers already show that young riders are taking advantage of the new fare. Youth ridership reached 355,000 trips in the first five months of 2026, a 26% jump from the same period last year.

Summer tends to see youth ridership levels climb even higher. In 2025, youth ridership jumped 35% between spring and summer. If that trend holds this year, 2026 is on track to be a record year for young riders on the Peninsula. Young people are almost twice as likely to hop on during the weekend, about 32% of youth trips happen on weekends, compared to 17% for other riders.

The stations with the highest share of youth riders are College Park, Broadway, Belmont, Menlo Park and Bayshore.

If the young person in your life hasn't tried it yet, there's never been a better time. With a $1 fare and no parking headaches, Caltrain is the best way to get them straight to the action.

Caltrain is a proof-of-payment system that requires riders to pay their fare before boarding. Clipper® is the all-in-one reloadable transit card for the Bay Area — and a convenient way to pay your Caltrain fare – but riders can now also simply tap on and off with their contactless credit card or digital wallet at the Clipper reader.

Riders without Clipper, credit/debit cards, or a digital wallet can purchase tickets at station ticket machines. Tickets are not sold on board, so please purchase your ticket before riding.
