Caltrain’s COO Bouchard Named to 2018 Women in Rail

Caltrain’s Chief Operating Officer Michelle Bouchard was recognized as one of Railway Journal’s 2018 Women in Rail. The award comes in recognition of her industry experience, leadership skills, contributions to the rail industry, and her involvement in community service.

Bouchard has a long history with Caltrain, having spent 14 years in its Rail Transportation Department, where among other things, she conceptualized the agency’s Baby Bullet service before leaving to be a group manager for BART, where she led the eBART and Oakland Airport Connector projects. Upon her return to Caltrain as COO in 2015, she has presided over a system with growing ridership that will greatly expand its service capacity in 2022 with the launch of the Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project.

“We’re very proud of Michelle for everything she does to deliver a rail service that a growing number of Bay Area residents depend on every day,” said Caltrain Executive Director Jim Hartnett. “Thanks to her efforts, 65,000 daily riders are able to make smarter travel choices today, and future riders can look forward to expanded service, improved reliability, and faster travel times. We truly would not be able to deliver these benefits to the region without Michelle’s incredible commitment to her work.”

The Women in Rail campaign is now in its second year.

About Caltrain: Owned and operated by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, Caltrain provides commuter rail service from San Francisco to San Jose, with limited commute service to Gilroy. Caltrain enjoyed more than five years of consecutive monthly ridership increases, surpassing more than 65,000 average weekday riders. While the Joint Powers Board assumed operating responsibilities for the service in 1992, the railroad celebrated 150 years of continuous passenger service in 2014. Planning for the next 150 years of Peninsula rail service, Caltrain is on pace to electrify the system, reduce diesel emissions by 97 percent by 2040 and add more service to more stations.
