Caltrain temporarily suspending train service between San Jose Diridon and Tamien to complete Guadalupe River Bridge repairs

This weekend, Aug. 22–23, Caltrain is suspending service between Tamien and San Jose Diridon stations to complete necessary repairs to the Guadalupe River Bridge

The final closure due to bridge repairs is planned for the weekend of Sept. 19–20. Caltrain’s weekday service and Caltrain riders not traveling to Tamien Station should not be affected by construction.

The Guadalupe Bridge Replacement Project is a critical safety project that will replace the original northbound bridge built in 1935 and provide seismic improvements of the southbound bridge. Additionally, the project will protect the creek from erosion, allowing for a healthy and flourishing aquatic habitat. Construction takes place primarily during daylight hours.

Work in this area is complex due to the need to protect the environment of the Guadalupe River. As such, Caltrain has worked with many regulatory agencies, including the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California State Water Resources Control Board, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Santa Clara Valley Water District, to approve the work plan. The total project cost is approximately $171 million.

So far this “dry” season, Caltrain has completed the placement of the northbound bridge deck, seismic improvements of the southbound bridge and begun restoration activities for the river channel. Caltrain expects to finish the bridge construction by October.

In addition to Caltrain, the Guadalupe Bridge supports Union Pacific, Amtrak and the Altamont Corridor Express rail service.
