Understanding Track Changes

Caltrain normally operates on two tracks — one for northbound trains and one for southbound trains.

A track change occurs when trains in both directions must share a single track through a section of the corridor. When this happens, trains may use a different platform than usual at some stations.

During a track change, you may notice:

  • Your train boards from a different platform than usual
  • Trains moving more slowly through the area
  • Short delays while trains wait for clearance to proceed

Always check platform displays, listen for announcements, and check signs on the exterior of the train before boarding.

Caltrain provides platform and service updates through:

  • Visual Messaging Signs (VMS) on most station platforms

  • Digital ePaper displays for South County Stations

  • Official social media channels

Riders can subscribe to service alerts at caltrain.com/alerts to receive notifications for specific trains or stations.

Track changes usually occur during planned maintenance or construction when crews need access to one track to complete repairs or improvements.

They may also occur due to:

  • Emergency track repairs
  • Weather related conditions
  • Police or fire activity near the tracks
  • Obstructions or other unexpected incidents

Using one track allows trains to continue operating while crews safely address the issue.

If a track change is in place:

  • Check platform displays before boarding
  • Listen for station or train announcements
  • Allow extra travel time when possible
  • Ask station staff if you are unsure which platform to use

Track changes help keep trains moving while work or emergency response takes place. Caltrain works to restore normal two track operations as quickly as possible.
