Caltrain monitors earthquakes in real time to protect riders and employees and to maintain safe rail operations.
Caltrain participates in the Rapid Earthquake Data Integration system, developed by the University of California, Berkeley. The system provides immediate information about an earthquake’s magnitude and location and helps determine how service may be affected.
Without this technology, maintenance teams would need to manually inspect the full 50-mile corridor between San Francisco and San Jose after every significant seismic event.
How Earthquakes May Impact Service
Service adjustments depend on the earthquake’s magnitude and proximity to the Caltrain corridor.
Magnitude 4.5
Within a 50-mile radius:
- An internal alarm sounds.
- No operational changes are required.
Magnitude 5.0 – 5.7
Within a 50-mile radius:
- Trains operate at restricted speed.
- Trains may not exceed 20 mph.
Magnitude 5.8 – 6.2
Within a 50-mile radius:
- Train service stops until track inspections are completed.
Within a 100-mile radius:
- Trains operate at restricted speed.
Track Inspections
Track Inspections
If an inspection is required, trained crews evaluate:
- Track conditions
- Bridges and tunnels
- Overhead systems and surrounding infrastructure
- Potential hazards such as fallen trees or downed wires
Inspections are conducted using specialized rail-compatible vehicles. The time required depends on the location and severity of the earthquake and the extent of any damage.
Track segments south of Tamien Station are inspected by Union Pacific Railroad.
Inspection direction and response coordination depend on:
- Earthquake magnitude
- Location of the epicenter
- Train locations at the time of the event
- Availability and positioning of inspection vehicles
Safety First
Caltrain prioritizes safety during and after seismic activity. Service may be temporarily delayed or suspended to allow inspections and ensure safe operating conditions.
Riders should check caltrain.com/alerts for current service information following an earthquake.
