Special Service
While Caltrain’s focus is providing commuter rail service,
it still serves as a vital link for the communities along its
right of way, offering reliable transit up and down the
Peninsula for social, personal or recreational activities.
Caltrain recognizes and values this role, and takes active
steps to offer special service to a variety of different events
in the region, many of which take place on weekends or evenings.
Caltrain provides additional trains for San Francisco Giants
home games at AT&T Park, one block from the
San Francisco Caltrain station. This year, ridership
averaged more than 4,000 passengers per game.
Caltrain’s regular service carries fans to home games for
the San Jose Sharks at the HP Pavilion, located across
the street from the San Jose Diridon station. And, when
the Stanford Cardinal plays football at home, Caltrain offers
a special stop across from the campus.
Caltrain often runs extra service for large concerts and
events along the Peninsula. These include New Year’s Eve
and Fourth of July celebrations along the waterfront in
San Francisco, the KFOG Kaboom! festival, and the
Bay to Breakers race. Nearly 400,000 riders took
advantage of Caltrain’s service to special events in 2006.
Each winter Caltrain runs a special Holiday Train to help
collect holiday toys for needy children. This show train,
which does not carry passengers, visits nine stations
along the Peninsula during the first weekend in December.
Thousands of local residents come to each stop, to donate
toys and watch the show, which features bands, choruses
and a cast of costumed characters.
