Bicycles
Caltrain was one of the first commuter rail systems in the
nation to welcome bicycle commuters and currently has one
of the most extensive bicycle access programs in the country.
Every train has at least one bike access car and the program
has been so successful that Caltrain sometimes has
trouble meeting the demand from all bike passengers
during peak commute hours.
While adding bike capacity is not currently an option,
Caltrain works hard to stretch its limited resources to
accommodate passengers with bikes. Bicycle storage is
available at most Caltrain stations. At some locations,
bike lockers are available, while at others plans are in
process to offer attended bike storage facilities.
A new bike storage facility is in the later stages of
construction at the San Francisco station. Expected
to open at the end of 2006, it will offer storage for up
to 100 bicycles, as well as maintenance and
repair services.
As part of its ongoing commitment to provide the best possible
bike access, Caltrain has received a state planning grant to
develop a bicycle master plan. Beginning in fall 2006, Caltrain
will work with stakeholders, local cities and counties, and bicycle
advocacy groups to develop the plan. When complete, it will
include guidelines for station access, bike parking and
recommendations for bike-related improvements at up to 10 stations.
