Temporary Closures at Howard Avenue Crossing in Burlingame April 6-8

Beginning tonight at 9 p.m., Caltrain will perform foundation installation work in Burlingame that will require two nights of closures at the Howard Avenue grade crossing.

The first closure will be Friday, April 6, from 9 p.m. to Saturday, April 7, at 5 a.m. Another closure is scheduled for Saturday, April 7, from 9 p.m. to Sunday, April 8, at 5 a.m.

Construction activities during these closures are expected to include excavation, placement of rebar, concrete fill, electrical grounding and installation of foundations. Some work will be done during the day as well.

Caltrain will work with contractors to minimize night work to limit the impact to surrounding communities; however, some work must be performed at night in order to maintain regular Caltrain service. To mitigate noise and other impacts during night and weekend activities, the field team will use acoustical noise barrier blankets and lights will be positioned away from residential and business areas.

Illuminated and directional signs will direct vehicle traffic to detours at North Lane and Bayswater Avenue.

Caltrain has established a dedicated project hotline and email for residents concerned about these potential impacts. The project information line can be reached at 650.399.9659 or toll free at 1.800.660.4287. The e-mail is calmod@caltrain.com.

The project is part of Caltrain electrification, a key component of the Caltrain Modernization Program. Caltrain electrification, scheduled to be operational by 2022, will electrify and upgrade the performance, operating efficiency, capacity, safety and reliability of Caltrain’s commuter rail service between Fourth and King Street Station in San Francisco and the Tamien Station in San Jose.

About Caltrain: Owned and operated by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, Caltrain provides commuter rail service from San Francisco to San Jose, with limited commute service to Gilroy. Caltrain enjoyed more than five years of consecutive monthly ridership increases, surpassing more than 65,000 average weekday riders. While the Joint Powers Board assumed operating responsibilities for the service in 1992, the railroad celebrated 150 years of continuous passenger service in 2014. Planning for the next 150 years of Peninsula rail service, Caltrain is on pace to electrify the system, reduce diesel emissions by 97 percent by 2040 and add more service to more stations.
