Caltrain to Increase Service, Offer Free Rides for New Year’s Eve

In order to make sure New Year’s revelers can enjoy their night safely and responsibly, Caltrain and SamTrans will be offering free service from 8 p.m. on Sunday, December 31, until 5 a.m. Monday, January 1.

Caltrain will provide extra capacity for northbound trains (435, 437 & 439) headed to San Francisco during the early evening and will operate additional southbound trains after the end of the San Francisco fireworks show. Post-firework trains will make all local weekend stops from San Francisco to San Jose.  Departure times will vary depending on crowd size and will depart when full, with the final train departing San Francisco at 2 a.m.

Caltrain does not allow open alcohol containers on trains after 9 p.m. following special events. Disruptive passengers will be asked to detrain.

On Monday, January 1, Caltrain will operate its standard Sunday schedule. Shuttle service to and from Tamien station and San Jose Diridon station will also be provided. SamTrans will also be running on its standard Sunday schedule.

The administrative offices of the San Mateo County Transit District, which manages Caltrain and SamTrans, will be closed on Monday, January 1.

About Caltrain: Owned and operated by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, Caltrain provides commuter rail service from San Francisco to San Jose, with limited commute service to Gilroy. Caltrain enjoyed five years of consecutive monthly ridership increases, surpassing more than 65,000 average weekday riders earlier this year. While the Joint Powers Board assumed operating responsibilities for the service in 1992, the railroad celebrated 150 years of continuous passenger service in 2014. Planning for the next 150 years of Peninsula rail service, Caltrain is on pace to electrify the system, reduce diesel emissions by 97 percent by 2040 and add more service to more stations.
