Caltrain Seeks Input on Bike Storage for New Electric Trains

As Caltrain continues design of its new high-performance electric train sets, the rail agency would like to hear from the public again about bike car storage.

Over the last few months, Caltrain has sought public input on various features of the new trains, including the exterior design of the trains and the color of the seats. Polling begins today at www.calmodtrains.com, by clicking on the “bikes” tab, and will be open until midnight on September 1.

During the month of August, Caltrain will conduct public outreach and polling at the following locations:

• August 8, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Silicon Valley Bike Summit located at Microsoft, SVC, Building 1, 1065 La Avenida St., Mountain View   
• August 9 & 10, from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., San Francisco Caltrain Station located at 4^th & King streets
• August 14, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Redwood City Caltrain Station located at 1 James Ave.
• August 15, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Palo Alto Caltrain Station located at 95 University Ave.
• August 16, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Menlo Park Block Party located in Downtown Menlo Park on Santa Cruz Avenue
• August 22, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., CalMod Outreach Office located at 2121 S. El Camino Real in San Mateo
• August 24, 5:45pm, BAC special meeting located at the  CalMod Outreach Office, 2121 S. El Camino Real in San Mateo

The new website allows the public to provide continued feedback on many design options over the next several months. Next year, after feedback on the design is complete, the site will feature a 360-degree virtual tour of the new trains.

The $1.98 billion Electrification Project will upgrade the performance, operating efficiency, safety, and reliability of Caltrain’s commuter rail service. It will provide Peninsula communities with a state-of-the-art, modernized rail service that reduces travel time, increases capacity and helps relieve congestion on one of the nation’s most important transportation corridors.

Converting service from diesel equipment to high-performance electric trains will transform travel between San Jose and San Francisco. Electrification builds the foundation for future capacity expansion to accommodate job and population growth, while creating opportunities for new regional and statewide mobility options.

About Caltrain: Owned and operated by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, Caltrain provides commuter rail service from San Francisco to San Jose, with limited commute service to Gilroy. Caltrain enjoyed more than five years of consecutive monthly ridership increases, surpassing more than 65,000 average weekday riders. While the Joint Powers Board assumed operating responsibilities for the service in 1992, the railroad will celebrate 150 years of continuous passenger service in 2014. Planning for the next 150 years of Peninsula rail service, Caltrain is on pace to electrify the corridor by 2019, reducing diesel emissions by 84 percent and adding more service to more stations.
