  1. Initiated the Caltrain Electrification Project. On July 21, 2017, Caltrain held the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Caltrain Electrification Project. This project will electrify the Caltrain corridor between San Francisco and San Jose and will equip the corridor with high-performance electric trains that will deliver faster, more frequent service to help the system accommodate rapidly increasing ridership demand. The project will reduce noise generated by Caltrain, improve local air quality, reduce GHG emissions and create thousands of jobs in the Bay Area and beyond. Construction will take place throughout the Caltrain corridor installing the new infrastructure necessary to support an electrified system. The Electrification Project is expected to be completed in 2021.
  2. Prepared a Sustainability and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory. Caltrain prepared a detailed inventory of the agency’s energy usage, water usage, waste generation and diversion, and employee commuting.
  3. Published Caltrain’s inaugural Sustainability Report. This report summarizes Caltrain’s sustainability performance between fiscal years 2010 and 2016.
  4. Switched to Renewable and GHG-free Electricity. Beginning in May 2017, Caltrain’s electricity usage at stations, facilities, and signals along the right-of-way has been 65 percent renewable and 79 percent GHG-free through participation in three Community Choice Energy programs.
  5. Continued Participation in Regional Resilience Initiatives. SamTrans continues to support San Mateo County’s Sea Change efforts to assess the impact of sea level rise within the county. SamTrans is also participating in the Adapting to Rising Tides Bay Area Project, which is a multi-jurisdictional, regional scale adaptation planning project funded by Caltrans and the Bay Area Toll Authority that is intended to increase the region’s resilience to current and future flood risk
  6. Adopted a New Bicycle Management Plan. In November 2017, Caltrain adopted a new Bicycle Management Plan to allow Caltrain to more effectively manage its large and growing amount of bike riders using the system. Under the new plan, Caltrain will work to increase bike parking capacity at stations along the corridor. With an estimated 6,000 bikes brought on board each day, Caltrain has more on-board storage capacity than any other commuter rail service in the country.
  7. Released an Electronic Ticketing App. In December 2017, Caltrain introduced electronic ticketing to enhance the customer’s experience and ease of travel. The process will result in avoided waste associated with plastic re-usable ticket cards and single-use paper tickets.
