Helen Morrison is an important Bay Area sculptor whose work has influenced regional artists for more than 40 years. Her very personal style is influenced by keen observation — the shape of a tree or bird, faded paint on a wall, the texture of a flower petal, or planes of a human head. In clay, Helen develops surface interest with lines and color. In wood, she delves into carving on a single block or log, seeking inspiration from its grain. Helen considers her work a protest against ugliness, confusion and impermanence. As an artist, she strives for perfection in her craftsmanship.
For Meditations, painter and architect Sim Van der Ryn assembled a collection of watercolors. Created at a conference on the shores of Lake Como at the Rockefeller Foundation estate Bellagio, the paintings are a study of the Italian landscape affected by the almost daily bursts of rain. In that classic setting, Sim settled into the ephemeral ambiance produced by wet earth and sky, and transformed his Italian paintings into visual mediations.
