Construction, Installation and Maintenance

Construction is advancing along the Caltrain corridor! To accommodate the brand new electric trains, construction crews will begin work in the four San Francisco tunnels starting in October. Crews will create additional clearance in the tunnel sides to accommodate the new trains and will install anchor bolts in the tunnel ceilings to facilitate the installation of the overhead contact system that will power the new electric trains. In order to facilitate work in the tunnels, trains will not operate on weekends between San Francisco and Bayshore Stations from October 6, 2018 to late Spring 2019. Caltrain service will stop at Bayshore Station and a bus bridge will transport passengers to the 22nd and 4th & King Stations. Weekday service will not be impacted. South San Francisco Station Improvement Project

Weekday Work

Monday, December 3, to Friday, December 7, crews will continue street work on Poletti Way between East Grand Avenue and Corporate Drive. Crews will also continue to install pole foundations and perform utility relocation work in the station area.

 

Neighbors may hear additional noises from heavy machinery and equipment backup alarms. We apologize for any inconvenience these activities may occur.

Poletti Way Traffic Notice

Starting August 8, temporary lane closures of Poletti Way between East Grand Avenue and Corporate Drive will be required to facilitate the construction of street improvements being completed as part of the Caltrain South San Francisco Station Improvement Project. One lane of Poletti Way will remain accessible to local and through traffic during construction. Please pay attention to additional signage when using Poletti Way.

 

After the completion of the South San Francisco Station Project, Poletti Way will become a two-way street, with the Southbound lane being reserved for buses serving passengers at the new South San Francisco Station.

 

Linden Avenue Grade Crossing

 

Starting August 24, Caltrain will begin installation of overhead wire along the corridor in South San Francisco as part of Caltrain Electrification. Vehicles may experience short delays at the Linden Avenue grade crossing during wire installation. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. 25th Avenue Grade Separation Project

Grade Separation Night/Weekend Work

On Saturday, December 1, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.:

  • Crews will conduct fiber optic relocation work in the Caltrain temporary parking lot between 31st Avenue and Curiosity
  • A lane will be closed on Pacific close to Antioch from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for crews to conduct fiber optic relocation work

 

At night on Monday, December 3 to Friday, December 7, crews will work on the retaining walls north of 25th Avenue.

Weekday Work

Traffic Information (Monday, December 3 to Friday, December 7)

  • E. 25th Avenue: Lane closure on the eastbound center lane between El Camino Real and S. Delaware from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Street parking may be limited and flaggers may be assisting with traffic coordination at the railroad crossing. All businesses along E. 25th Avenue will remain open during construction.
  • Pacific Blvd. (near Antioch): Lane closure from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Flaggers will assist bi-directional traffic flow.

 Construction Work

  • 25th Avenue: Monday, December 3 to Wednesday, December 5, crews will work on the bent and conduct signal work
  • 28th Avenue

Parking Lot Impacts

On Saturday, December 1 through December 2019, there will be no access to the Caltrain temporary parking lot from 31st Avenue. Vehicles can access the lot from 28th Avenue at S. Delaware. Please note some spaces in the temporary parking lot located on the eastside of the Hillsdale Station will be unavailable due to the construction work.

Background

Caltrain, in cooperation with the City of San Mateo, will raise the tracks and slightly lower the road (grade separate) at E. 25th Avenue in San Mateo. This will improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians, and it will reduce local traffic congestion in San Mateo. In addition, the project will create new east-west street connections at 28th and 31st Avenues; and as part of the project improvements, Caltrain will build a new elevated Hillsdale Station with updated amenities at E. 28th Avenue. 

 

Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2020. In order to maintain regular train service, some activities will be conducted during nights and weekends, outside of normal train service hours. Neighbors may experience construction noise and light during these times. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Background

The Grade Crossing Improvements Project is a one-year project to improve the safety at 15 grade crossings (places where streets cross the tracks) along the corridor from San Francisco to San Jose. Improvements include more clearly-marked pedestrian crossings with new paint striping and lettering; tactile pavement markers; and guardrails. Medians will also be installed or improved at eight locations.

Positive Train Control (PTC) Project

SunnyvaleSunnyvale Station Rehabilitation Project

Weekday Work

On Monday, December 3 to Friday, December 7, crews will be working. For passengers, please note:

  • The north pedestrian crossing will be closed due to construction. All passengers will need to use the south pedestrian crossing to access the platforms.
  • The south pedestrian crossing will remain open but may be blocked when a train arrives. Passengers are encouraged to arrive early to the station to allow enough time to cross the tracks to meet their train.

Background

The Sunnyvale Station Rehabilitation Project is a safety improvement project that will update the station's platform length to allow for a six car train to fit the platform. It will also relocate the pedestrian crossing at the northbound end of the station platform approximately 80 feet closer to Mathilda Avenue to prevent the crossing at the southbound end of the platform from being blocked. In addition, the project will replace uneven pavers on the platform with a smooth concrete surface.

Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project

 

Caltrain Electrification is a key component of the Caltrain Modernization program which will electrify the Caltrain Corridor from San Francisco's 4th and King Caltrain Station to approximately the Tamien Caltrain Station.

 

The primary purpose of Caltrain Electrification is to improve Caltrain system performance, reduce long-term environmental impact by reducing noise, improving regional air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. An electrified Caltrain system would better address Peninsula commuters' vision of increased service and improved travel times in an environmentally friendly and reliable way. This also is expected to help accommodate increase system ridership through improved system operations.

San Francisco

On December 1, Caltrain will be working during the day to perform utility potholing at the 4th and King and 22nd Street station platforms. On December 1 through December 7, Caltrain will be working during the night to locate underground utilities. Crews will perform grouting and drilling work in the tunnels as well as notching work to provide additional clearance for the new electric trains. San Francisco to San Jose

Saturday, December 1, to Friday, December 7, crews will pressure wash and perform janitorial work at Caltrain stations between the San Francisco and Tamien stations.

 

Saturday, December 1, to Friday, December 7, crews will weld and grind rail at various locations between the San Francisco and Tamien stations. The welding crew uses air compressors, gas-powered generators, small power tools, electric-arc welders and propane heaters. Neighbors may experience maintenance noise during this time. Crews will work as quietly as possible.

San Francisco to Brisbane

Saturday, December 1, to Friday, December 7, crews will resurface rail between the San Francisco and Brisbane stations. Caltrain uses several different on-track, self-propelled machines to replace resurface rail, and neighbors may experience maintenance noise during this time. Crews will work as quietly as possible.

 

San Bruno to Burlingame

Saturday, December 1, to Friday, December 7, crews will resurface rail between the San Bruno and Burlingame stations.
