Caltrain Modernization Program

The Caltrain Modernization Program encompasses several interrelated projects that will upgrade the performance, operating efficiency, capacity, safety and reliability of Caltrain's commuter rail service.

The Caltrain 2004-2023 Strategic Plan anticipates effectively meeting the region's mobility needs with service enhancements and capacity improvements through a capital program that includes corridor electrification, the operating of new, more efficient electric vehicles and the installation of an advanced signaling system.

In addition to guiding the planning and implementation of these projects, the Caltrain Modernization program also manages the agency's coordination with the California High-Speed Rail Authority , the state entity responsible for planning, constructing and operating the California's future high-speed rail system. The Caltrain corridor has been identified as the preferred route for the high-speed rail system between San Jose and San Francisco.
