Caltrain Adopts Short-Range Transit Plan
The Caltrain Board of Directors adopted an updated version of its 10-year Short-Range Transit Plan at its February meeting.
The SRTP incorporates information from two long-range planning documents for Caltrain service, its strategic plan and Caltrain 2025.
The strategic plan, which was adopted in 2004, defines a policy for developing Caltrain into "the preferred mode of travel" on the Peninsula. Caltrain 2025, which was adopted in concept in 2006, outlines the evolution of the railroad into a rapid rail system.
Major challenges faced by the rail agency also are reflected in the SRTP. Among these are expanding capacity to meet growing demand, a structural deficit in the operating budget and regulatory restrictions that prohibit the operation of light weight electric trains and heavy rail diesel trains on the same right of way.
The SRTP is a mid-term planning document that meets regulatory requirements set by the Federal Transit Administration and the
Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
