Caltrain Construction Begins At Two Palo Alto Stations

Beginning Saturday, Dec. 15, Caltrain will start construction at both train stations in Palo Alto. The year-long, $35 million construction project will improve track capacity and rail safety in Palo Alto, as well as bring both train stations up to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Palo Alto Caltrain Station
At the main Palo Alto station on University Avenue, crews will modify the existing pedestrian underpasses and ramps, add accessible ramps at the northern- most underpass and replace existing platforms with longer platforms.

Construction crews will fence-off the southern portion of the station on both the northbound and southbound platforms, and the underpass along University Avenue will not be accessible to customers. Passengers are reminded to pay attention to the safety cones and signs through the station as walkways will modified during construction.

California Avenue Caltrain Station
Construction at the California Avenue station will replace the current center-boarding platform with outside boarding platforms on both sides of the tracks, with a fence between the train tracks to prevent pedestrians from crossing the tracks. When construction is complete, pedestrians will cross between the platforms using a new pedestrian underpass.

Passengers will continue to board and detrain at their usual areas until after the New Year. Later in the project, passengers will board further south, and Caltrain will notify customers prior to the change. Passengers are urged to pay attention to signs and safety notices as the project progresses.
