Bike Parking Again Available At Palo Alto Caltrain Station
The Bikestation at the Palo Alto Caltrain Station is back in business,
offering a simple and convenient way to combine train-riding with
cycling at one of Caltrain’s busiest stops.
Housed in the former Southern Pacific baggage room on the
west side of the historic train station, Bikestation Palo Alto had
been closed for seismic upgrades and other construction at the transit center.
A grand opening ceremony is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 27, although a handful of cyclists have
already begun to sign up and are using the facility.
Bikestation will be open initially for bike-parking only
but its full array of retail and repair services will be
added later, after Caltrain completes some construction
on the platform near the building, according to Jeff Selzer,
general manager of Palo Alto Bicycles, Bikestation’s operator.
Cyclists who don’t need their bikes on both ends of their
trips can park them at Bikestation-type facilities and pick
them up on their return.
Although not a Caltrain-sponsored facility, Bikestation
at Palo Alto should facilitate increased ridership on the
train by cyclists, since bike space can be at a premium
on popular trains such as the Baby Bullets, which
serve Palo Alto.
Caltrain has just begun work on a
bicycle master plan
aimed at enhancing bike access at stations
along on the rail system, and Caltrain’s first bike
parking facility is expected to open soon at the
San Francisco station.
