Caltrain Rail Grinding to Begin April 26
On Saturday, April 26, Caltrain crews will begin rail grinding along the corridor
from San Jose moving north to San Francisco. Rail grinding is vital in the
maintenance of rail safety. In order to preserve the life of the tracks, rail
grinding is necessary. Rail grinding activities involve grinding the rail to
smoothly fit the train's wheel. Over time, usage and exposure the rail is worn down
requiring "re-profiling." Work will continue between April 26 and May 4.
Rail grinding will take place for 8 days as follows:
Daylight Hours
7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
| Apr. 26 & 27
|
May 3 & 4
|
Night Hours
9 p.m. to 5 a.m. |
Apr. 28, 29, & 30
|
May 1
|
Please be aware that rail grinding, like other maintenance activities, will cause
some noise and smoke. While Caltrain recognizes this may be a disturbance, the work
will be very short in duration. The rail grinding train also throws off sparks as it
is moving over the rail. This is also normal. Rail grinding trains are equipped
with pumps to water the area as it passes through.
Area police and fire departments also are being notified.
We appreciate your cooperation while we are rail grinding. Caltrain crews will
attempt to keep disruption to a minimum.
