Caltrain Fare Modification Fact Sheet
In recognition of the significant growth to services over the last several years,
Caltrain is changing its fare structure and fare collection system. The changes,
which will go into effect September 22, 2003, will help enable Caltrain to provide a
more efficient service. The changes will simplify the fare structure for ease of
understanding, offer consistent fare media for all rider groups, and
reduce the potential for fare abuse and evasion.
Fare Structure Changes (PDF, 16.9 KB)
- Simplified, equidistant zone structure. Number of zones reduced from nine to
six.
- New fare media.
- Day pass
- Ten-ride ticket introduced for senior, disabled, and youth riders
- Zone upgrade
- Consistent rider discount policy and pricing.
- All ticket types available to all rider categories
- Standardized youth age of 5 - 17 years
- Consistent discount pricing at 50% of full fare
- Consistent regional transfer policy.
Fare Collection Changes (Proof-of-Payment)
- Onboard ticket sales discontinued.
- Fare enforcement using written citations.
- Ticket validity period changes.
- One-way tickets valid for four hours
- Day passes, replacing round-trip tickets, valid until end of service day
- Each ride of ten-ride tickets valid for four hours after validation
- Stopovers allowed during trip
- Use of validator machines.
- Ten-ride tickets validated by customer at machine prior to boarding
