Take Transit to Do-It-Yourself Faire May 18 & 19

Creative, resourceful people can take transit to the Maker Faire at the San Mateo County Event Center May 18 & 19. The two-day, family-friendly festival of invention and resourcefulness will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This event showcases individual creativity and grassroots innovation in the largest festival devoted to DIY culture and technology in the country. Food and live entertainment will be presented along with demonstrations in everything from 3-D photography to embroidery.

Caltrain offers hourly service on Saturdays and Sundays, making all local weekend stops between San Jose and San Francisco.  A free shuttle to the event will operate continuously from the Hayward Park station. Also, the Hillsdale station is within walking distance of the Expo Center.

About Caltrain: Caltrain is owned and operated by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, a partnership of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, the San Mateo County Transit District and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority. The commuter railroad provides service from San Francisco to San Jose, with limited commute service to Gilroy. Caltrain has enjoyed 28 consecutive months of ridership increases, surpassing more than 50,000 average weekday riders earlier this year. While the Joint Powers Board assumed operating responsibilities for the service in 1992, the railroad will celebrate 150 years of continuous passenger service in 2014. Planning for the next 150 years of Peninsula rail service, Caltrain is on pace to electrify the corridor by 2019, reducing diesel emissions by 90 percent and adding more service to more stations.

About SamTrans: The San Mateo County Transit District is the administrative body for the principal public transit and transportation programs in San Mateo County: SamTrans bus service, including Redi-Wheels paratransit service, Caltrain commuter rail and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. Caltrain and the TA have contracted with the District to serve as their managing agency, under the direction of their independent boards.
