Learn How To Make A Difference at Earth Day Fair

To encourage more people to jump on the green bandwagon, the San Mateo County Transit District will host an Earth Day Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 23 at the Redwood City Caltrain Station/SamTrans Transit Center. The transit hub is located at 1 James Ave., next to the Sequoia Station shopping center.

In addition to SamTrans and Caltrain information, the free, lunch-time event will feature a variety of booths to educate people about how they can “green” their life and their community. Participants include:

  • Allied Waste will show people how to make recycling at home and work easy.
  • The American Heart Association will promote the Start! program. Start! calls on all Americans to create a culture of physical activity and health to live longer, healthier lives through walking.
  • Chain Reaction Bicycles, a full service bike shop located in Redwood City, will demonstrate a folding bike.
  • The Electric Green Showroom, which sells a line of electric scooters, sedans and trucks, will have some of its products on display.
  • Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance, an agency working to reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicles traveling in the county, will present information on its programs, which include employer shuttles and carpools.
  • PG&E will offer information about its unique offerings to help conserve energy and money, and help the environment.
  • The San Mateo County Food System Alliance will show people how they can make a positive impact on the environment by choosing locally grown food.

The Transit District is sponsoring the event to encourage people to take a positive step to reduce their carbon footprint. According to the American Public Transportation Association, switching to public transportation reduces individual carbon emissions by 20 pounds per day or 4,800 pounds per year.

SamTrans and Caltrain transport nearly 100,000 people on an average weekday.
