Center Street to Close Temporarily for Rail Maintenance
Center Street to Close Temporarily for Rail Maintenance
Caltrain will temporarily close Center Street at the railroad tracks in Millbrae from 8 p.m. Friday, May 22 until 6 p.m. Saturday, May 23 to reconstruct the crossing and adjacent track as well as to repave the street. The work has been scheduled over one weekend to minimize the impact to the neighborhood.
During the temporary closure, vehicles and pedestrians will be allowed to use the nearby pedestrian crossing at Santa Paula Avenue. Flagmen will direct traffic at the crossing and police will monitor traffic. From the east side of the train tracks, the crossing is accessible from the southern end of Monterey Street. From the west side of the train tracks, the crossing is accessible from the northern end of Hemlock Avenue.
Caltrain is tentatively scheduled to return to Center Street June 1 to make additional improvements. However, the schedule is subject to change. The improvements include clearly marked pedestrian crossings with fencing and gates, sidewalks and pavement markings, roadway medians and other safety measures.
The work in early June will be done at night from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. on weekdays and from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekends for three weeks. During construction, one lane of Center Street will remain open. Flagmen will direct traffic and pedestrians around the construction activity.
The work is part of a larger program to improve grade crossings in San Mateo County.
