Caltrain to Rebuild Redwood City Rail Crossing

As part of its regular maintenance program, Caltrain will rebuild the Maple Street crossing in Redwood City. More rock will be added between the bridge deck and the railroad tracks to improve drainage and prevent corrosion of the steel deck. The work will take place from 8 p.m., Friday, March 6 until 5 p.m., Monday, March 9.

During this time, Maple Street will be closed at the train tracks. Signs will direct traffic and pedestrians to a detour around the construction area. Those needing to travel westbound over the tracks will be directed to use Main Street. Those traveling eastbound should turn right on Lathrop Street and then left on Elm Street to Main Street.

There will be times when trains will need to “single track” around the construction and all passengers will board the train from the same platform at the Redwood City and San Carlos stations. On Saturday until 2 p.m., all passengers will board from the northbound platform. On Sunday until noon, all passengers will board from the southbound platform. Ambassadors in the stations and conductors on the train will direct passengers.

Pennsylvania Avenue, a one-way street behind the Redwood City Library, will be used to store construction materials and will be closed to traffic. Library patrons and employees will be able to continue to enter and exit the library parking lot from Middlefield Road.

Neighbors will hear construction noise from saws and jack hammers removing concrete, cranes lifting track panels, heavy equipment moving gravel and trucks placing asphalt. Two portable light towers, powered by a diesel generator, will be used for night work.
