Caltrain Promotes Rail Safety Education

Since Caltrain acquired the rail right of way along the Peninsula in the 1990s, safety has been a top priority. Not only is it important to have proper engineering and enforcement in place when it comes to rail safety, it also is important to educate the public.

This month, Caltrain is celebrating Railroad Safety Month in conjunction with Operation Lifesaver, an internationally renowned program promoting rail safety. However, Caltrain gives rail safety presentations year-round to raise public awareness about the dangers around railroads.

In 2006, Caltrain redoubled its efforts by launching the “Don’t Shortcut Life” rail safety campaign. A major component of the campaign focuses on educating the community about safe behavior near active rail lines. Since the program’s inception, Caltrain staff has made more than 200 presentations to more than 13,000 people including students, community groups, police and fire officials, elected officials and civic leaders.

Currently, there are seven Caltrain staff members who are certified to give the rail safety presentations. Topics of discussion include: pedestrian and vehicle violations, weight and speed of trains, trespassing and suicide prevention signs, and what to do in case of an emergency.

Caltrain is committed to its role as a safety advocate and will continue to communicate safety messages with the goal of increasing public awareness and ending tragic collisions, fatalities and injuries at grade crossings and on the right of way.
