Caltrain Construction and Maintenance: Sept. 24 to 30

Caltrain Construction and Maintenance: Sept. 24 to 30

Construction

San Bruno Grade Separation Project

Work on the San Bruno Grade Separation Project will take place Saturday, Sept. 24 to Friday, Sept. 30. Please note that the northern pedestrian crossing at the station is no longer in service and will remain out of service for the duration of the project. All patrons need to use the southern pedestrian crossing to move between the two train platforms.

Day work will take place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. This work will include potholing, traffic improvements at the San Bruno and San Mateo avenues intersection, utility relocations, signal system upgrades, construction of amenities for the temporary station, track work, and water line and sanitary sewer relocations. Utility relocations will primarily occur at the intersection of San Bruno and San Mateo avenues. Motorists should expect delays. Relocation of water lines and sanitary sewers will primarily occur along Huntington and Angus avenues and may require temporary lane closures. Traffic cones and flaggers will direct motorists and pedestrians around the affected areas.

Night work will take place from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., outside of peak passenger service hours. This work will include paving for the temporary station along Huntington Avenue, signal system upgrades, grading for the shoofly, construction at the intersections of San Bruno and San Mateo avenues, and installation of pedestrian gates, new amenities, and a signal house at the temporary station. Digging work will require the use of a backhoe, mini-excavator and jackhammer. At times, noise levels could be as high as 75 decibels. Crews will use generators to power portable light towers. Night work will be done in accordance with Caltrain and city agreements and ordinances.

The $147 million project will elevate the Caltrain tracks above three existing at-grade street crossings at San Bruno, San Mateo and Angus avenues. A new elevated Caltrain station will be constructed between San Bruno and San Mateo avenues, replacing the existing station at Sylvan Avenue.

Santa Clara Station Improvement Project
Work on the Santa Clara station will take place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Saturday, Sept. 24 to Friday, Sept. 30. The work will include continued construction on the pedestrian underpass connecting the north- and southbound platforms, which will allow two trains to pass through the station at the same time and will improve safety for pedestrians in the station. Crews also will work on new platforms and passenger shelters.

For the safety of the traveling public and workers in the area, it is important that patrons wait for all trains on the southbound platform, closest to the station building. People should observe all posted signs and follow directions from identified ambassadors and conductors. Scheduled train stops at the station will not be affected by the construction. Tickets can still be purchased at the existing ticket vending machines.

The south parking lot at the station will be closed until the station improvement project is completed. Passengers are asked to follow signs directing them to additional parking on the western side of the station.

The work is part of an 18-month station improvement project that will add a new wider, longer center-boarding platform and extend the southern platform 150 feet. For additional information, call the Caltrain construction outreach information number at 650.508.7726 or visit us online.

Jerrold Avenue Bridge Replacement Project
Beginning Thursday, Oct. 6, Jerrold Avenue will temporarily be closed to through traffic between Rankin and Quint Streets. This temporary closure will last until Nov. 5. The closed street will be used to assemble the new bridge and dismantle the old one.

Construction for the bridge replacement project will occur from Monday, Sept. 26 to Friday, Sept. 30. Crews will deliver ballast from Menlo Park, paint and waterproof the new bridge structure, erect bridge supports and frames, and conduct track work during the day between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

San Mateo Bridges Rehabilitation Project
Caltrain will continue retrofitting four rail bridges in San Mateo, Monday, Sept. 26 to Friday, Sept. 30. Crews will work extended hours from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The project involves seismic improvements to the bridges that cross Poplar, Santa Inez, Monte Diablo and Tilton avenues.

Crews will continue installing support columns and walls for the bridges. No drilling work will take place after 7 p.m. Each street will have one lane of traffic closed. Concrete barriers and flaggers on site will direct motorists and pedestrians.

After the retrofit is complete, the streets will need to be resurfaced and the sidewalks repaved. This work will take place from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. One street will be closed at a time and signage will be provided to direct traffic to alternate routes. Caltrain asks that vehicular and pedestrian traffic follow posted traffic control signs and barriers when utilizing these areas. Crews will make their best effort to work as quietly as possible.

San Jose Diridon Station Improvements Project
Caltrain will primarily conduct day work at the San Jose Diridon station from Saturday, Sept. 24 to Friday, Sept. 30 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is part of the 18-month long San Jose Diridon and Santa Clara Stations Improvements Project. The crews will work on signal and switch upgrades that will be constructed at both ends of the San Jose Diridon terminal will improve train operations by allowing quicker train movement in and out of the terminal.
