Caltrain Construction and Maintenance: Nov. 19 to 25

Caltrain Construction and Maintenance: Nov. 19 to 25

Construction

San Bruno Grade Separation Project

Work on the grade separation project will take place during the week, from Saturday, Nov. 19 to Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Day work will take place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. This work will include removing and installing traffic signs, upgrading signal systems, installing and removing fences along the right-of-way, grading for the shoofly, roadway striping, installing crossing gates at Angus Avenue, track work, and water line and sanitary sewer relocations. Motorists should expect delays. Relocation of water lines and sanitary sewers will primarily occur at Angus and Huntington avenues and may require temporary lane closures. Traffic cones and flaggers will direct motorists and pedestrians around the affected areas.

Night work will take place from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., outside of peak passenger service hours. This work will include upgrading signal system and relocating communication utilities. Demolishing the former station must occur at night so as not to disrupt train service and also to protect the safety of construction workers given the close proximity to tracks. Digging work will require the use of a backhoe, mini-excavator and jackhammer. At times, noise levels could be as high as 75 decibels. Crews will use generators to power portable light towers. Night work will be done in accordance with Caltrain and city agreements and ordinances.

The $147 million project will elevate the Caltrain tracks above three existing at-grade street crossings at San Bruno, San Mateo and Angus avenues. A new elevated Caltrain station will be constructed between San Bruno and San Mateo avenues, replacing the existing station at Sylvan Avenue.

Santa Clara Station Improvement Project

Work on the Santa Clara station will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Saturday, Nov. 19 to Wednesday, Nov. 23. The work will include continued construction on the pedestrian underpass connecting the north- and southbound platforms, which will allow two trains to pass through the station at the same time and will improve safety for pedestrians in the station. Crews also will work on new platforms and passenger shelters.

For the safety of the traveling public and workers in the area, it is important that patrons wait for all trains on the southbound platform, closest to the station building. People should observe all posted signs and follow directions from identified ambassadors and conductors. Scheduled train stops at the station will not be affected by the construction. Tickets can still be purchased at the existing ticket vending machines.

The south parking lot at the station will be closed until the station improvement project is completed. Passengers are asked to follow signs directing them to additional parking on the western side of the station.

The work is part of an 18-month station improvement project that will add a new wider, longer center-boarding platform and extend the southern platform 150 feet.

Jerrold Avenue Bridge Replacement Project

Jerrold Avenue continues to be temporarily closed to through traffic between Rankin and Quint streets. The closure has been extended to Dec. 5 to allow more time to dismantle the old bridge that was replaced Oct. 15.

Monday, Nov. 21 to Wednesday, Nov. 23, crews will replace sidewalks and repave Jerrold Avenue between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

San Mateo Bridges Rehabilitation Project
Caltrain will continue retrofitting four rail bridges in San Mateo, Monday, Nov. 21 to Wednesday, Nov. 23. Crews will work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The project involves seismic improvements to the bridges that cross Poplar, Santa Inez, Monte Diablo and Tilton avenues. Crews are installing, concrete foundations, support columns and walls for the bridges.

Each street will have one lane of traffic closed. Concrete barriers and flaggers on site will direct motorists and pedestrians.

After the retrofit is complete, the streets will need to be resurfaced and the sidewalks repaved. This work will take place from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. One street will be closed at a time and signage will be provided to direct traffic to alternate routes. Caltrain asks that vehicular and pedestrian traffic follow posted traffic control signs and barriers when utilizing these areas. Crews will make their best effort to work as quietly as possible.

San Jose Diridon Station Improvements Project

Caltrain will work between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the San Jose Diridon station from Monday, Nov. 21 to Wednesday, Nov. 23. This is part of the 18-month long San Jose Diridon and Santa Clara Stations Improvements Project. The crews will work on signal and switch upgrades and test the signal system. These improvements to the San Jose Diridon terminal will improve train movements in and out of the terminal.

Maintenance

Caltrain will perform routine maintenance at several locations next week. To avoid delays to passengers, the work will take place Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. There will be some construction noise from equipment used to accomplish the work, but crews will work as quietly as possible.
