Caltrain Construction and Maintenance: Dec. 31 to Jan. 6
Caltrain Construction and Maintenance: Dec. 31 to Jan. 6
Construction
San Bruno Grade Separation Project
Work on the grade separation project will take place during the week, from Saturday, Dec. 31 to Friday, Jan. 6.
Day work will take place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. This work will include asphalt and concrete work at the San Bruno and San Mateo avenues intersection, grading, relocating communication utilities, constructing drainage systems and tracks for the shoofly, surfacing tracks, installing temporary tracks east of current tracks, installing crossing gates at Angus Avenue and sanitary sewer relocations.
Motorists should expect delays. Relocation of sanitary sewers will primarily occur at Angus and Huntington avenues and may require temporary lane closures. Traffic cones and flaggers will direct motorists and pedestrians around the affected areas.
Night work will take place from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., outside of peak passenger service hours. This work will include earthwork, relocating crossing gates at Angus Avenue, upgrading the signal system, and constructing drainage systems and tracks for the shoofly. Digging work will require the use of a backhoe, mini-excavator and jackhammer. At times, noise levels could be as high as 75 decibels. Crews will use generators to power portable light towers. Night work will be done in accordance with Caltrain and city agreements and ordinances.
The $147 million project will elevate the Caltrain tracks above three existing at-grade street crossings at San Bruno, San Mateo and Angus avenues. A new elevated Caltrain station will be constructed between San Bruno and San Mateo avenues, replacing the existing station at Sylvan Avenue.
Santa Clara Station Improvement Project
Crews will work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 3 to Friday, Jan. 6, on the southbound platform. The project will allow two trains to pass through the station at the same time and improve safety for pedestrians in the station.
The south parking lot at the station will be closed until the project is completed. Additional parking is available on the west side of the station.

San Jose Diridon Station Improvement Project
Caltrain will work from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 3 to Friday, Jan. 6. The crews will work on signal upgrades and install amenities on the new platforms.
The work is part of the 18-month long San Jose Diridon and Santa Clara Stations Improvements Project.
Jerrold Avenue Bridge Replacement Project
From Friday, Jan. 6 to Sunday, Jan. 8, crews will conduct track improvements around the clock. This includes single-tracking through the area including the Bayshore station, which means that trains will run in both directions on the same track. All patrons at the Bayshore station should follow the directions of station signs and identified ambassadors. Scheduled train stops at the station will not be affected by the construction.
This project is nearing completion. Caltrain replaced an old rail bridge on Oct. 15 with a new seismically sound bridge. Crews also repaved streets and sidewalks under the Jerrold Avenue bridge.
Maintenance
Caltrain will perform routine maintenance at several locations next week. To avoid delays to passengers, the work will take place Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. There will be some construction noise from equipment used to accomplish the work, but crews will work as quietly as possible. Redwood City to San Jose
Tuesday, Jan. 3 to Friday, Jan. 6, crews will replace cross ties, weld and resurface tracks from the Redwood City station to just south of the San Jose Diridon station.
