Caltrain Construction and Maintenance: Dec. 10 to 16

Caltrain Construction and Maintenance: Dec. 10 to 16

Construction

San Bruno Grade Separation Project
Work on the grade separation project will take place during the week, from Saturday, Dec. 10 to Friday, Dec. 16.

Day work will take place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. This work will include asphalt and concrete work at the San Bruno and San Mateo avenues intersection, grading, constructing tracks for the shoofly, upgrading signal systems, installing crossing gates at Angus Avenue, track work, and sanitary sewer relocations. Motorists should expect delays. Relocation of sanitary sewers will primarily occur at Angus and Huntington avenues and may require temporary lane closures. Traffic cones and flaggers will direct motorists and pedestrians around the affected areas.

Night work will take place from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., outside of peak passenger service hours. This work will include moving and welding rails between Angus and San Mateo avenues, installing crossing gates at San Mateo Avenue, and relocating communication utilities. Digging work will require the use of a backhoe, mini-excavator and jackhammer. At times, noise levels could be as high as 75 decibels. Crews will use generators to power portable light towers. Night work will be done in accordance with Caltrain and city agreements and ordinances.

The $147 million project will elevate the Caltrain tracks above three existing at-grade street crossings at San Bruno, San Mateo and Angus avenues. A new elevated Caltrain station will be constructed between San Bruno and San Mateo avenues, replacing the existing station at Sylvan Avenue.

Santa Clara Station Improvement Project
Work on the Santa Clara station will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Saturday, Dec. 10 to Friday, Dec. 16. The work will include continued construction on the pedestrian underpass connecting the north- and southbound platforms, which will allow two trains to pass through the station at the same time and will improve safety for pedestrians in the station.

Additional work will occur from Friday, Dec. 16 to Monday, Dec. 19, at night from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. Crews will continue to work on switching the signals and tracks in preparation for the commissioning of the new center platform.

For the safety of the traveling public and workers in the area, it is important that patrons wait for all trains on the southbound platform, closest to the station building. People should observe all posted signs and follow directions from identified ambassadors and conductors. Scheduled train stops at the station will not be affected by the construction. Tickets can still be purchased at the existing ticket vending machines.

The south parking lot at the station will be closed until the station improvement project is completed. Passengers are asked to follow signs directing them to additional parking on the western side of the station.

The work is part of an 18-month station improvement project that will add a new wider, longer center-boarding platform and extend the southern platform 150 feet.

Jerrold Avenue Bridge Replacement Project
Jerrold Avenue continues to be temporarily closed to through traffic between Rankin and Quint streets. The closure has been extended to allow more time to dismantle the old bridge that was replaced Oct. 15.

Work will occur from Monday, Dec. 12 to Friday, Dec. 16. Crews will replace sidewalks, repave Jerrold Avenue, and stripe the road between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

San Mateo Bridges Rehabilitation Project
Caltrain will continue the rehabilitation project in San Mateo, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. from Monday, Dec. 12 to Friday, Dec. 16. Crews will paint bridge support structures.

The project nears completion and involves seismic improvements to the bridges that cross Poplar, Santa Inez, Monte Diablo and Tilton avenues and repaving the roadways underneath the bridges.

San Jose Diridon Station Improvements ProjectCaltrain will work between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the San Jose Diridon station from Monday, Dec. 12 to Friday, Dec. 16. Crews will also perform signal work early Thursday morning from 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is part of the 18-month long San Jose Diridon and Santa Clara Stations Improvements Project. The crews will work on signal upgrades and install amenities for the new platforms. These improvements to the San Jose Diridon terminal will improve train movements in and out of the terminal.

Caltrain will perform routine maintenance at several locations next week. To avoid delays to passengers, the work will take place Sunday through Thursday from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. There will be some construction noise from equipment used to accomplish the work, but crews will work as quietly as possible.
